Jan Leeroy New @Duemila

Monsters have become a way for societies to relegate the unfamiliar, the weird, and indescribable a place in their respective realities. What is monstrous is simply this fear of the unknown, this incapacity to situate a thing or idea a place in a world of categories and fixed definitions. Yet New seems to be at home with the unfamiliar and the alien, both figuratively and literally. He constantly attempts to create and recreate these hybrid forms and images, these monstrosities of common sense, as a means of affirming a kind of personal mythology.

Leeroy New (b. 1986, General Santos City) is a prolific young artist and designer whose practice overlaps and intersects with film, theater, visual arts, product design and fashion. He is a Visual Arts graduate of the Philippine High School for the Arts and University of the Philippines Fine Arts. New has received  several citations for his work, including the grand prize for sculpture in the 2005 Metrobank Art Awards and the 2009 Ateneo Art Awards with residency grants in Singapore and Australia. He has been nominated for the Signature Art Prize 2011 and 2012 CCP 13 Artists Award.
