International Museums Day

The International Council of Museums (ICOM) established International Museums Day in 1977 to increase public awareness of the role of museums in the development of society. In 2012, International Museum Day garnered record-breaking participation of 32,000 museums in more than 129 countries. The worldwide community of museums will celebrate International Museums Day on May 18.

ICOM Philippines will hold a forum on May 25 - 26 at the College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB).  The International Museum Day (IMD) theme for 2013: Museums (Memory + Creativity) = Social Change highlights the complexity of museum tasks and their contribution to positive societal influence and community development. IMD 2013 looks into  reconciling museums' traditional mission of conservation with the creativity necessary for their revival and development of their audiences.

The forum will cover the ICOM IMD 2013 guidelines providing for five (5) subthemes: a) informal education structures; b) social space rooted in its territory; c) avenue for intergenerational dialogue; d) harnessing of communication/mediation through new media and e) adopting innovative conservation practices.

The ICOM Rio 2013 General Conference will be held from August 10 to 17 where museum professionals are invited to participate in the extensive programme of the ICOM triennial General Conference, to be held for the first time in Brazil.
