The Clay Project

One of my assistants in the painting workshop at Creative Kids studio is Ren, a volunteer student, who once expressed a need to do a workshop in clay. Since I always do a feasibility study I told Ren we should compute the cost of the workshop including her fee so we know how much to charge the students, how many students to take, and the usual logistics of running a workshop. So I went with her to the shop to check  the availability of the polymer clay and discussed mechanics with her.
I bought one block to sample and study the logistics:
From the small block I only cut a small piece to make a sample work (dog pendant) which took me 5 minutes. Students may take longer but I have to demo in a short time. I also used a plain dental floss (unused of course!) as a great tool to slice and make little details. I am sure my model (my dog Sweepy) will like it ;-)
I was able to make most of my hounds in heaven (Sweepy, MrFrogsky, Petrocelli the stray cat, Chicky the tree, a ring, and heart earrings) using very little clay from that small block of polymer. I figured I can make a hundred little trinkets from the block! Imagine if I have different colored blocks then I can make several pieces in different colors! I also fired the pieces using our oven toaster (5 minutes) so maybe less than two hours would be perfect for this project.
I need to buy some contraption to make these into earrings.
And with some packaging it would be perfect as a gift!
The Polymer Clay Workshop will soon be announced. Watch for it! Or call Creative Kids studio at 7710861.
