Working on the CreativeKids studio theme of 'Philippine Fiestas' for this year's summer workshop, I am handling the Acrylic Painting workshop every Tuesdays and Thursdays.
I am featuring the work of my 9-year old student Raina as we worked on the Pahiyas theme last week:
Raina has to draw the basic shapes of the house, add the door and windows and paint it in the usual brown color of houses. Raina was taught how to mix primary colors to create several shades of brown. Then she has to paint the background in tints of blue and beige (taken from her umber brown mix earlier) for the ground area. By the time she finished painting the background and ground area, the house is dry and ready for the pahiyas decorations:
Pahiyas (decor) is held every May 15 in Lucban, Quezon in the Philippines in honor of San Isidro Labrador. The community lovingly prepares 'kiping', rice dough wafers brightly colored to adorn their homes for the fiesta (festivities) and add their year's harvest like vegetables, grains, fruits, and flowers from their garden.
On another session, Raina painted one of the Higantes (giant caricatures) celebrated every November in Angono, Rizal, using tall papier mache dolls that were paraded on the streets during the festival:
Painting local cultures like fiestas promote local traditions and encourage children to learn more and enjoy the wonderful celebrations in their country. I am sure these festivities will now be enjoyed in real time by Raina now that she has painted and captured it in her artwork.
The next batch of my painting class will be held from May 13 to 22, Tuesdays and Thursdays 3:30 - 4:30 PM at The Learning Child, 111 Cordillera Street, Ayala Alabang Village, under the CreativeKids studio.
